Deathly Hallows Mugglenet Article *SPOILERS BEWARE « Thread Started on Feb 2, 2008, 10:21pm »
Movie Magic?
Recent news that the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows movie may be split into two parts left me baffled. I asked myself, why split it into two parts? Now I think that Deathly Hallows could possibly be one movie. Warner Brothers converted a 870 page Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix novel into a 2 hour, 18 minute movie, in fact, the shortest movie of the whole series. But with that, left out some major plot points, like Sirius's Two-Way Mirror, and Mundungus Fletcher. David Yates and Steve Kloves will need to somehow work the mirror into Half-Blood Prince to not leave fans, and other movie-goers confused when Harry sees Aberforth Dumbledore’s eye in Deathly Hallows. (If they even keep that part in, of course.) I do not know how Mundungus Fletcher will be worked into the movie, because he has an important role to play in Chapter 11, The Bribe. But lets not all shake our fingers at Order of the Phoenix. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire left out some plot points as well. The biggest one, in my opinion, is the absence of Bill and Charlie, Ron's two older brothers. In Half-Blood Prince, Bill and Fleur announce that they will be married. It is going to be hard to introduce Bill and Charlie, in Half-Blood Prince. Movie-goers won't know them as well, and probably won't be as stunned as the fans were when Fleur announced to Harry of the marriage, or be as sympathized when Bill gets attacked by Fenrir Greyback. David Yates will have to pace himself with Half-Blood Prince, try to get in as much information as he can, without making it seem too rushed. And with a two part movie, we are looking at a three to maybe four hour movie. If you couldn't stand Lord of the Rings, then Deathly Hallows wouldn't be for you.
But what are the upsides of having a two-part movie?
Having a two-part movie is probably any Harry Potter fan's dream. More to enjoy? Maybe. Having two-parts means it won't be rushed, and we should get the plot information we want. Like The Prince’s Tale, and the Goblin's Revenge. Two parts also means longer scenes and more time with the trio before we say good-bye to Harry Potter.
What I would do with Deathly Hallows:
1. Make the chase in chapter three, The 7 Potters shorter, and the Battle for Hogwarts longer. If left too long, chase scenes can get very boring and uninteresting. The Battle, however, should be epic, and be compared to the wizard battle in the Order of the Phoenix movie, which was phenomenal.
2. The Horcrux hunting should be kept to a minimal. A nice and simple montage would do until an important scene comes, like Goblin’s Revenge, or Ron leaving.
3. I would cut the big celebration after Harry kills Voldemort. As I was reading The Flaw in the Plan, I imagined it as an intense, quiet scene. I think there should be a moment of silence after Voldemort is killed, and then the celebration really begins!
Overall, I think Deathly Hollows should be the best movie in the series (Even if Alfonso Cuaron does direct it, who did a terrible job in Prisoner of Azkaban in my opinion, plot-wise). I would also love to see John Williams come back and compose this film’s score. (I miss the original Hedwig’s theme!) I bet you this film will not disappoint fans, fantasy lovers, and moviegoers.
